It starts with Margaret losing her Mother and her Grandmother and her Father leaving to live with the Apache. Her best friend was Diane. Diane's husband betrayed her by selling the ranch and the land and leaving her stranded in New York with no money to bury her father. During the Commanche raid on their ranch and the journey of the retrieval of their cattle, they meet two other women who were Commanche slaves and brought them into their home.
