The Legend of Robin Hood has been told in England for at least 600 years. He and his band of gallant outlaws i ho robbed thes rich and gave to the poor have been described in dozens of poems and stories. It seems likely that there was once a rea! outlaw about whom the carlic it tales grew up. In the tales Robin has almost all the good qualitics. Daring in fight, he is also a great sportsman and a wonderful alcher; though stern to the evil-doer he robs, he is generous and gentle to all who are poorer or weaker, and protects all women folk; and he is witty and merry too. Chief among his companions in the green woods of Nottingham are Maid Marian, Little John (a man of huge size) and Friar Tuck (a jovial priest).
