The human condition, as it exists in this world of ours, is permeated by the absurd. The human condition is so per- meated by the absurd that some of the less fortunate have the audacity to say: well, that’s absurd. Why? Because the absurd questions the foundational categories by which we measure the pleasure, and even the meaningfulness, of our lives. These categories are the Good, the Beautiful, and the True. All these categories are challenged daily by the absurd in a variety of its manifestations; in other words – by that which is deemed unacceptable or meaningless. Humor is one of the most charming forms of the absurd. It is humor that allows us to disregard our obligation to rationalize the environment and to dress it in the abovementioned categories.
Therefore, we are addressed, through the form of primitive drawings, by not some prankster or vulgar provocateur, but by an intellectual cynic who makes us rethink both the public space and our modest sobriety in the face of the absurd. In this sense, “The Good, the Beautiful, and the True” is a proper kick to our lazy conformist backsides. This artistic-scientific study by Vilius Dranseika is a fundamental contribution to the Lithuanian critical discourse.
