Between 1768 and 1772, the Roman restorer Bartolomeo Cavaceppi published his renowned Raccolta d'antiche statue, busti, bassirilievi ed altre sculture (A collection of ancient statues, busts, bas-reliefs, and other sculptures), the first ever treatise dedicated exclusively to this subject.
Building on investigations into the broader art market in the Papal States and analysing specific nuances in the antiquities restored by Cavaceppi, this volume contextualises the Raccolta within the antiquities trading, editorial industry, and restoration practices that developed in Rome in these years.
This provides the background to the first English translation of Cavaceppi's treatise, making the most important source on eighteenth-century restoration available to international researchers and academics.
