Accounts of political order typically treat hatred as a consequence of instability, not as a source of it. Yet political hatred can arise independently of the merits of an order, weakening the norms and institutions that stabilise it. By explaining how this occurs, this book develops an account of the polarized hatreds within contemporary democracies that reshapes how political theory understands the relationship between emotions and political order.

Drawing on empirical research on affective polarisation and advances in the neuroscience of emotion, the book develops an agonist account of the limits of political stability. It then refigures deliberative democracy as an emotion-shaping practice capable of constraining the destabilising effects of political hatred.
