This book seeks to answer the question of what specific rhetorical strategies the Gospel of John employs to carry out its persuasive agenda. To answer this, the study utilizes classical rhetoric and Plutarchan studies to examine two key rhetorical strategies, namely, rhetorical genre and narrative rhetoric. It argues that while all three classical rhetorical genres are present, the deliberative predominates. The study constructs a theory of narrative rhetoric based on the classical rhetorical treatises and orations. It argues for understanding the relationship of the Prologue to the body of the Gospel as one where the Prologue sets forth propositions that are demonstrated in the ensuing narrative.
