The unresolved issue in Orion's Light, the Precursors, reappear and install threatening monitors in the solar system.
Brad, Connie, and their seven-year-old daughter, Mayahh, are thrust into pivotal roles as Humans, and the Elioi are given an ultimatum that will determine the future course of their mutual interstellar expansion. The conditions are not easily met. Will they Pass? Or Fail?
