Aprašymas

For twenty-four hours in the Paris banlieue, three friends move through a city that has already decided who they are.

Outside the Frame reads Mathieu Kassovitz's landmark 1995 film La Haine not as a portrait of violence, but as something more exacting: a study of what happens when the conditions that let meaning endure are stripped away, one scene at a time.

Vinz, Hubert, and Said are never short on intelligence, humor, or moral clarity. What they are denied, in a gallery, a police station, a missed train, a stranger's patient but untranslatable story, is the structural support that would let any of it matter. Drawing on framing theory and close formal analysis, Andrew Paul Williams traces that erosion scene by scene, arguing that the film's famous ending is not a rupture but a revelation: the final visibility of a collapse that has been happening in slow motion all along.

Rigorous without losing the film's intensity, personal without losing its argument, Outside the Frame asks what it means to live, and to watch, when the frames that hold experience together are never allowed to hold.
