This book describes Ayuo Takahashi's growing up during the socially turbulent 1960s in New York City. The first half of the book covers his autobiography up to 1990, while the second half comprises articles about music and culture written after 1990. Some of the essays cover subjects like "How language affects musical rhythms," "Cultural differences in Japanese and English lyrics," "How mythology affects music," and interviews with John Cale (ex-Velvet Underground), Bill Bruford (Yes), and Peter Hammill. There are essays about Takemitsu, Teshigahara, and Yokoo, all of whom Ayuo intimately knew. The book will be most appreciated by individuals who are interested in Asian culture and the problems that Western-educated Asians confront when they return to their ancestral homelands.
