1868. Sawles Ward and the Wohunge of Ure Lauerd: Ureisuns of Ure Louerd and of Ure Lefdi, etc. First Series. Parts I and II. A homily is an essentially oral event, but the only evidence we have for Old English homilies is in the form of written texts. The term homily is used to refer to several different kinds of preaching texts. The need for homilies in Old English presumably arose as soon as the Christian Church wanted to convert, exhort and instruct Anglo-Saxon people in their own language. This volume does not consist of a continuous series of Homilies, but instead is a compilation of fragments and smaller treatises arranged in the order in which the editor came across them.
