Such a star was Floren Lawrence, who spent the time waiting for her fitting chatting with her manager and a male admirer, and drinking with them a toast to the future.

But Floren had no future--for in a few minutes she was dead, and all the evidence indicated that she had been murdered--poisoned by morphine put in her drink.

The world of haute couture, the movie industry and journalism all became involved in the case, and its ramifications spread halfway across the continent and went back almost twenty years into the past.
