Newsha Tavakolian's work has been exhibited internationally at such museums as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Boston's Museum of Fine Art,the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum in London. Her work is in many American collection, eg. at LACMA, Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
2014 Tavakolian was selected as the fifth laureate of the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award, a 50,000-euro photojournalism prize from a French foundation started by the investment banker Edouard Carmignac. She stepped back from the prize after what she considered repeated interference from Mr. Carmignac, whom she accused in a Facebook post and interviews with international press (e.g. NYT Lensblog, Le Monde) of distorting her vision by editing her images, demanding changes to her text and insisting on titling the project "The Lost Generation," which she thought was not only a cliché, but could possibly provoke Iranian authorities. Tavakolian reversed her decision only after Carmignac agreed to a change of rules: that the curation of exhibition and book are done exclusively by the jury of the award.
