Brett McSweeney died on Jack's watch. Jack drove a week to tell Brett's sister, Reese, face to face.

He picked the wrong week. A teacher named Hannah Iverson has vanished from her own driveway, and the whole town is holding its breath. The school is closed. Mothers keep their kids on a bench where the whole street can see them. Every evening the county turns out to search, and every night it comes home with nothing.

The town decides Jack is a state investigator. He lets them. It's the only way in.

Then he sees what the sheriff's deputies are really doing. They aren't looking for Hannah. They're working through her students, one scared kid at a time.

Somebody in this town knows what happened to her. Somebody with a badge would rather nobody found out.
