This book is written as a sequel to one already published which I call Great Mystery Films. Due to production coast, all films could not be documented under one cover. This book covers some forty films, made between 1939 and 1991 and also includes complete cast listings, a story synopsis for each film, directorial credits, and numerous photographs.

Mystery films are concerned with the solving of crimes, mostly murders. Detectives are usually heavily featured, whether they are private ones or work for a police force or department. This central character frequently investigates an unsolved crime and unmasks the perpetrator. These films in general conceal the identity of the guilty party, although in some instances the viewer identifies the culprit early on and watches how the police or detective trips them up.
