Melanoma is a form of cancer which develops from melanocytes or pigment-containing cells. It occurs in the skin, mouth, intestines or the eyes. It may develop due to ultraviolet light exposure or from a mole with irregular edges, size and skin breakdown. It can be prevented by avoiding exposure to UV light and by using sunscreen. Melanoma can be categorized as lentigo maligna, superficial spreading melanoma, nodular melanoma, desmoplastic melanoma, etc. It is the most critical form of skin cancer. It can be diagnosed based on a visual examination, dermatoscopic examination and a biopsy. The complete surgical excision of the melanoma with acceptable surgical margins and followups for assessing the presence of detectable metastatic disease is a standard procedure. Chemotherapy drugs are prescribed for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. For locally advanced cutaneous sarcoma and malignancies, isolated limb infusion is effective for delivering regional chemotherapy. High-risk melanomas usually require adjuvant treatment.
