Aprašymas
A fascinating text, Occitan Health Advice for the Layperson combines elements of the Secretum secretorum and Regimen sanitatis literature and has sollicited insufficient interest since scholars first called it to our attention in the nineteenth century.
The text was composed in Occitan, the vernacular of medieval southern France, and exists in multiple manuscripts and fragments. This volume presents a new edition of the Occitan text accompanied by an English-language translation. Included in the volume are a detailed linguistic introduction, a survey of the context of this advice in the medieval Mediterranean world, and illustrations from manuscripts contemporary with the text, all intended to bring the Occitan text to life.
The newly edited text gives us a better picture of medieval Occitan interests in food and health and allows us to integrate this significant and too often ignored text into the scholarly discourse. A general reader interested in medieval topics will also enjoy the work.
