Aprašymas
The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy has trained generations of firefighters who protect communities across the commonwealth. From its roots in regional fire training programs of the 1930s to a statewide academy in the 1960s, the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy grew into one of the nation's leading fire service training institutions.
Historic photographs, archival documents, and firsthand accounts illuminate the academy's remarkable journey from its humble beginnings at Cushing Hospital through its formative years at Stow and the devastating 1982 arson fires that threatened its future. The rebuilding of a modern campus transformed fire service education in Massachusetts. Its people, programs, facilities, and innovations helped professionalize firefighter training and establish consistent standards throughout the commonwealth. Today, the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy operates its principal campus in Stow and regional campuses in Springfield and Bridgewater.
Joshua Shanley is a retired firefighter-paramedic, historian, author, and educator with more than three decades of experience in the fire service. The images featured in this volume are drawn from the collections of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, private collections, and other archival sources throughout Massachusetts.
