Aprašymas
An artist monograph on one of the pioneers of digital art.
A pioneer in the artistic use of what would later be known as the computer, Manfred Mohr was, in the 1960s, a passionate musician who played the saxophone in jazz clubs alongside his work as a visual artist. Using his computer, he began to compose a digital and pictorial work, much like a musical score, thereby inventing algorithmic art. Abandoning the subjectivity of the gesture in favour of generative systems, Mohr engaged in a radical dialogue with the machine. His work is based on the development of algorithms capable of producing autonomous forms, giving rise to an aesthetic founded on logic, permutation and transformation. The cube, as a matrix structure, becomes the terrain for the exploration of an art form, where compositions as rigorous as they are unpredictable unfold.
Through a selection of iconic works on display at venues including MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, this book highlights the power of an approach that anticipates the contemporary challenges of digital creation. At the crossroads of art, mathematical rigour and computer science, this monograph stands as a reference work, offering a fresh perspective on art history through the lens of technology. This book is an essential tool for understanding the emergence and lasting influence of generative practices in the field of contemporary art.
