Aprašymas

Paris, 1970. Edith Borger's reputation as a sculptor is growing, as is her infant son. She cannot know that soon the murder of she and her son will be front page news across the world.

Edith's attempts to live a normal life have been foiled at every turn by the extraordinary times she lives in. Born in Czechoslovakia, her family were decimated by the Holocaust as she fled the Nazis to Britain, Palestine and America, where she joined the US Army as a radio operator. Through it all she is driven by a relentless urge to create and finally, in 1959, won a scholarship to the prestigious École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Edith's sculptures were bought and sold in London and New York, as she brushed elbows with Man Ray and Picasso in Montmartre.

Meanwhile, her marriage to the petty Robert is in tatters, as he openly flaunts his other girlfriend in front of Edith's family and drives the two women into conflict with one another. Finally Waltraud, the daughter of a rampant Nazi, snaps. Breaking into Edith's flat with a hammer, she kills both Edith and her baby. The case and trial cause scandal across Europe, eventually reaching England where her ten-year-old niece Karen is devastated.

For decades, the details of Edith's life and death are a mystery until, in 2021, routine construction uncovers Edith's studio completely intact. Among her art are Edith's precious diaries, recording her travels through a war torn world, witnessing the Nuremberg trials and the birth of a nation, in search of a place of safety.

This treasure trove launches Karen on an unforgettable journey to finally understand her aunt's remarkable but tragic life, and, 50 years later, the shocking circumstances of her murder.
