I thought I spoke English, but soon learned I spoke American. Survival depended on learning conversions and new terms in order to purchase groceries and gas, do laundry, and travel about the country. You wouldn't believe it! We even faced the threat of deportation. In time I did learn to function in my new surroundings, and somewhere along the way, I learned to love this city along the banks of the River Humber and still think of it as home.
