The glass sculptures by the international renowned artist in dialogue with Venetian old masters.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Leiko Ikemura. TransLucent features glass sculptures by Leiko Ikemura (born in Tsu, Japan). Her works are presented in this volume in a dialogue with old Venetian masters (such as Paolo Veneziano and Carpaccio, Tiepolo and Titian) from the permanent collection, and the museum's monumental spaces. Drawing on her long experience with paintings and sculptural works, Leiko Ikemura has explored the artistic potential of glass works, further affirming her interdisciplinary approach. The transparency and evanescence of this material hold a particular fascination for the artist. In this new project, she will highlight the almost transcendent quality of glass as "form made of light", in a carefully calibrated dialogue with the works of the collection. Venice, a city with a centuries-old tradition of glassmaking, will provide the perfect setting for this exhibition.

Among the exhibition's most significant works are the series Sleep and Lying Luz, which reflect on the female iconography of Venetian painting, represented by Titian's Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple or Carpaccio's Dream of Saint Ursula. Since the 1980s, Leiko Ikemura has explored themes of transition, transculturalism, and collective awareness beyond nations and genders. The artist seamlessly shifts between luminous, otherworldly and often monumental paintings, introspective drawings and watercolours, glazed terracotta sculptures, glass and ceramics.
