Anton Makarenko was to Soviet education what John Dewey was to education in America. Ukrainian Makarenko taught orphans after World War II, and his methods became the model for Stalin-era education. "Your enormously important and amazingly successful educational experiment is of world-wide significance." -- Maxim Gorky
