OJP's bureaus and offices provide grants and other awards to various organizations, including state and local governments, universities, and private entities, which are intended to develop the nation's capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist crime victims. Within OJP, NIJ serves as DOJ's research and development agency and provides evidence-based knowledge and tools to address crime and justice challenges, particularly at the state and local levels.
