From 1537, however, the Company's story, in outline at least, is reasonably clear. It has known many vicissitudes of fortune, but its story, as it unfolds in this book, is engrossing, and the development of the Company proceeds until the crowning achievements of two world wars. Many great names of English history from Stuart times to the present day are inscribed in the Company's Great Vellum Books, and conspicuous among the honours it has achieved are four Victoria Crosses. Maj. Goold Walker, DSO, MC, FSA, FRHistS was Secretary to the Company 1922-1947. His son, father, grandfather and great-great-uncle were all members of the HAC. This third edition has an additional chapter by Colonel G. R. Armstrong, DSO, MC, TD, covering the period 1947-1987. Maj. Armstrong had a distinguished career in the HAC, joining in 1930 and becoming Colonel of the 1st Regiment in 1953.
