Tom Mathews (aka Sparks) is homeless, living on the back streets of San Francisco. He is a non person, without money, job, decent clothes or home. Everyday is a bad day, with rarely enough food and lives in a plastic tent. He is surrounded by a variety of other homeless people, many who are ruthless and violent. Tom's enemies, in addition to natural elements is the constant threat of harassment from those in authority and violent street thugs. To escape he must neutralize his enemies and learns quickly how to respond in kind in order to save his life. His longing for a normal life drives his determination to find a path that leads away from his plight. His life becomes even more dangerous when he has to protect an undercover police officer who is trapped and beyond her skill level. He must save her in order to save his own life. This is a story that captures the rough and raw view of what it's really like to be homeless.
