As the Russian forces of the 5th Tank Army cut through the weak German lines to encircle Stalingrad in Operation Uranus, the next phase of their operations was to move westwards and drive their tank forces into the heart of the collapsing German front. Facing them were what was referred to by the new commander of the XLVIII panzer Corps, General von Knobelsdorf, as a ragtag and 'motley mix of rear units supported by the remnants of two elite German divisions'. This book tells the story of how this improvised group of German units held back daily Soviet attacks between November 1942, while their comrades tried to relieve Stalingrad, and after when the Soviets tried to crush German forces in Southern Russia. The Battles of the Chir River were pivotal in holding the Stalingrad Front and produced many Knights Cross awards to officers and men who then went on defending two further rivers as the Germans retreated westwards. Based primarily on the memoirs and interrogation notes of the men that were there - including the US Intelligence papers for General von Knobelsdorff and other new translated accounts - this book is a valuable addition regarding how German battlefield techniques and training succeeded in the face of overwhelming superior numbers of the Russian forces.
