This book examines the key works of humanistic historiography in Poland-Lithuania during the long sixteenth century, showing how these writings functioned as political interventions and instruments in struggles over authority, legitimacy, memory, religion, and constitutional order. It also emphasizes how ethnogenetic myths and narratives of liberty helped define the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and underscores the role of historical writings in Renaissance debates about republicanism and constitutional order.
