This is the only single-volume hardcover edition of this classic work, originally published in three volumes from 1836 to 1844. More than 80 full-color lithographs, most painted by Charles Bird King. This groundbreaking study and documentation of Native American tribes from all over the continent provides an in-depth look into Native American culture before European settlers arrived on their land, which has become invaluable in understanding what happened to them in the aftermath. It is important for those who are not Native Americans to learn about these cultures because they have been so widely misrepresented throughout history. This volume is dedicated to the memory of my great-grandfather and namesake, William Zimmerman Jr., who spent 22 years in government service, mostly with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where he was acting Commissioner from 1947 to 1950, and to my great-uncles Chester and Carson Ryan, who both worked for the BIA for many years.
