The New Austrian Tunneling Method, or Sequential Excavation Method, is applicable for soft ground mixed face tunnels in urban environments, caverns, adits, bifurcations and shallow tunnels where it is not always practical or economical to use a tunnel boring machine or conventional excavation methods.
