Utilizing historic records and photographs of the University Archives, newspapers, and interviews, Graduate Education at Clemson and the Evolution to a University takes the reader on a journey through 100 years of successes and challenges of building graduate education and research at Clemson. It posits that graduate education is single-handedly responsible for transforming a once small-town "high seminary of learning" into a powerhouse internationally renowned university, and provides much deserved focused attention on the Graduate School, and its predecessors, for orchestrating and sustaining the graduate teaching and research mission of the University. Highlighted are internal voices of some of the key individuals who invested energy into developing policies and programs that shepherded the growth of graduate education and research at Clemson as well as external voices of industry leaders, graduate deans of Southern universities, U.S. presidents, and others who likewise influenced Clemson's strategies and trajectory as it evolved into intellectual maturity and relevance. More than one hundred graduate alumni "trailblazers" are featured as engaged student leaders advocating on behalf of the graduate student population and/or as career superstars representing the extraordinary education and mentoring they received in the classrooms and laboratories of their graduate programs.
