Aprašymas

How the idea that all of life is gift, and that everyone has gifts to contribute, could transform British society.

Britain is more unequal, more distrustful, and more divided than it was a generation ago. Britain, according to diagnoses from across the political spectrum, is "broken". What is less clear is what to do about it — and who is actually placed to help.

Authors Martyn Snow and Florence Gildea argue that the answer lies not in a new policy but in an older idea: that human communities are held together by the obligation to give, to receive, and to return, and when this obligation atrophies, neither the market nor the state can fill the gap. At the heart of their argument is a claim that cuts against the grain of modern Britain — that all of life is a gift, and that every person, whatever their circumstances, has something to contribute to the common good.

Drawing on anthropology, theology, and the experiences of communities across England, the authors trace how de-industrialisation, austerity, and decades of individualism have quietly eroded a culture of mutual obligation and how — through in-person encounter, small communities, and tackling poverty — it can be rebuilt.
