Aprašymas
'From Markup to Markdown' is a history of how writers have used computers to write, how it has evolved and changed, as well looking ahead to see what the future looks like for technical writing and printing. Following in a similar vein of the seminal work 'Software Tools' (1976) by Kernighan and Plauger this book will explore both the "tech history" and "how it works" with code examples so readers can explore and fully understand how each writing tool and framework is used.
Starting with an overview of the major milestones of writing with digital technologies since the 1960s, we will start with RUNOFF then discuss how this inspired 'roff' on Unix (and then nroff or new roff, then troff or typesetter roff). We'll also cover word processing milestones like WordStar and WordPerfect, and printing technologies like the Teletype, phototypesetter, and the dot matrix printer before moving onto modern markup and proofing systems, like HTML,Markdown and LibreOffice and how they still play a role in how we write and communicate today.
From Markup to Markdown will be ideal for writers, technical communication professionals, history of computing researchers as well as 'retro-computing' enthusiasts.
