Free-wheeling or the one-way clutch made gear shifting possible without using the clutch pedal at all. Cars could coast along at cruising speeds with the engine at idle, saving fuel. However, by the late 1930s, free-wheeling was virtually gone from new-car showrooms, replaced by overdrives, synchro-mesh or vacuum-assisted gearshifts.
