In the context of education, excellence is usually understood in terms of grades, achievements, and intelligence, rather than what kind of thinkers or learners students are becoming. This book looks at excellence in terms of the cultivation of intellectual virtues such as open-mindedness, intellectual humility, attentiveness, inquisitiveness, and intellectual perseverance. How do these virtues describe different kinds of intellectual excellence? How are these virtues cultivated in the classroom? What are some challenges to the pedagogical aim of teaching these virtues?
