Aprašymas

This book was written for a particular reader: the undergraduate encountering, often for the first time, the moral imagination of ancient India - and, alongside that reader, the teacher who must render a vast and unfamiliar corpus intelligible in the span of a single value-added course. The course "Ethics and Values in Ancient Indian Traditions," introduced within the framework of the National Education Policy 2020 and its Undergraduate Curriculum Framework, sets an ambitious task in a modest number of credits. It asks students to move from the naming of a civilisation to the deepest questions of human purpose, traversing the Vedic sense of cosmic order, the dissenting energies of the Upaniṣads and the śramaṇa movements, the theory of kingship and society, and finally the fourfold scheme of life's aims. To meet that task, a companion is needed that is faithful to the sources, alert to scholarship, and yet written to be read.
