He was disillusioned with the communist regime in his country which made it impossible for him to publish his volumes of writings, of which he was able to save El juego de la viola. In 1978 he went into exile and settled in Miami, where we wrote Boarding Home, winner of the 1986 Letras de Oro award, and one of the most outstanding novels in recent Cuban history. Suffering from an incurable mental ailment, as well as ghosts from his hostile past and a persistent sense of failure, Guillermo Rosales ended his life on July 6, 1993.
