Conventionally it is believed that agriculture is the back bone of the Indian economy. Over the years, structural changes took place in the agricultural sector. But still agriculture continues to be the back bone due to different reasons. In the era of globalised agriculture, crop specific performance is vital in deciding the competitiveness of agriculture. But one of the serious concerns of the agricultural performance is the volatility in the yield of crops. Pulses occupy a prominent place in Indian agriculture. Besides being a rich source of protein, they are also important for sustainable agriculture.
