The cultural politics of the Austro-Hungarian Empire shaped modes of writing the art histories of East Central Europe, just as contemporary Austria continues to do. Taking into account the era of the Dual Monarchy as well as the period after 1989, the contributors critically scrutinize the imperial legacies, transnational transfer processes and cultural hierarchies in art historiographies, artistic practices and institutional histories in regional cultural and political contexts surrounding the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.
