Often, disobedience carries implications of negativity and punishment. Disobedient Futures is a speculative literature anthology that exemplifies, through both structure and word, what the future might look like if different cultures disobey. The book includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and hybrid work, as well as fine art and photography. Divided into sections on disobedience in gender, identity, class, borders, the environment, and the future, contributors investigate the possibilities and disruptions that may result from the deviation, subversion, and reconfiguration of societal conventions. Writers explore utopian and dystopian landscapes, parallel histories, futuristic places, and alternative realities, but each exploration maintains a resemblance to our world, showing the imminence of change. Because the works bear an uncanny resemblance to our own world, the speculation is far from distant--it sends the message that the future should and must be disobedient.
