Every time B.K. Fischer spots a couch that is put out for the trash, she pulls over to check it out. Disaster Porn is a record of these curbside encounters and an extended meditation on what it means to live and love under the sign of disaster. Grounded in an ecopoetics that hews closely to lived experience and the life of the body, these poems document what we waste and what we savor as we live through and bear witness to catastrophe at all scales. “Catastrophe,” at the root, means “overturning,” and these poems turn over the language forms—the compositions and decompositions—that give shape to perception, desire, and fear. As those forms break down, spread out, rekindle, and reconnect, the collection tackles questions of theodicy and mortality, envisions Cassandra as a suburban teenager tormented by prophesy, confronts the ubiquity of plastic, and revisits the original site of disaster porn—Pompeii.
