Jena Cohn, a lonely alcoholic expatriot, engages in a crossing over time into the days of resistance and retribution of the Spanish Civil War, of the French Resistance, of the Occupation of France and back towards the present. Her repayment of indebtedness to the Frenchwoman who had saved her life becomes Jena's own salvation.
