Aprašymas
A poetry collection that embraces the balance between national and global tragedies and the beauty of everyday life.
In August of 2014, while balancing his young daughter on his lap, David Roderick scrolled to a headline reporting that his friend, journalist James Foley, had been killed by ISIS. Darkness for Beginners, Roderick's third poetry collection, embodies the two realities clashing in that moment, exploring how the world's inherent brutality co-exists with the tenderness of fatherhood and family.
With Foley as its moral compass, Darkness for Beginners offers a quietly radical rebuttal to American culture's conceptions of strength. Roderick's poems wrestle with masculinity in the domestic sphere and with the failures of patriarchy at every level, especially its penchant for corrosive politics, racism, and environmental disaster. Despite the tragedies they address, the poems in this book evoke moments of comedy and awe, revealing a rich life in which an acorn in a child's hand "contains twenty million future oaks, potentially."
