A Navajo woman rides into the Capitan Mountains to find the one man who'll go after the outlaws who took her daughter. They call him Crotalus - rattlesnake - because he likes to lay in the sun.

New Mexico Territory. Cheveyo lives alone in a box-canyon hogan with a wolf-like dog and a purple mustang. The cavalry won't help Dyani get her daughter back. The mission school is gone.
