Inside the collective and communal practice of Silät, a group of women creating contemporary textiles from Wichí mythology and local materials

The ancestral power of the act of weaving lies at the core of the work of Claudia Alarcón & Silät, a collective of weavers from the Wichí people. Formed in 2023, the group currently comprises more than 100 women who live in the province of Salta in northern Argentina. Under the leadership of Indigenous artist Claudia Alarcón (born 1989), these weavers from the Alto la Sierra and La Puntana Wichí communities developed a technique in which a single piece may be worked on collectively. Different patterns and references, drawn from the Wichí's mythology and geography, thus synthesize into a living document of Indigenous history, traditional crafts and women's roles in the domestic sphere. This bilingual (English/Portuguese) volume accompanies exhibitions of Silät's work at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand and at the Gund at Kenyon College.
