Jane was a much loved and cared for child, but the dynamics of the British Colonial rule in the Caribbean, where she was raised, the governmental control in the school system, and the island's cultural fervour during the 1950s and 60s all play a part in her perspective of the world around her as she ages. A stable home life did not equate to the same in the outside world. With the innocence of a child, Jane struggles to understand and cope with the traumatic occurrences and the lasting effect they have on her emotionally.
