The Midnight-to-Three Rediscovery series showcases works by contemporary writers that were published and forgotten -- stories, essays, and other work that has fallen by the wayside, never been collected, and now lives on the fringes of each writer's bibliography. The goal is simple: make these potentially unknown, unread, or hard-to-locate pieces available to readers once more, and re-introduce them to the discussion of the writer's work.

The second Rediscovery chapbook presents three little-known short works by Charles Portis, author of the classic coming-of-age western True Grit. Working as a novelist, Portis produced very little short fiction. The three pieces included come from the late 1950s to mid-1960s and are either little-known or have never been reprinted, including:

"Damn!" - possibly Portis's first published fiction, this story appeared in a men's magazine in 1957 and was left to the side for decades before being found and reprinted around 2013.

"Of TIME, the River, and Greasy Creek, etc." - a rebuttal to TIME magazine's national demeaning of Arkansas, this forgotten editorial for his university's newspaper attained a remarkable life of its own (told in a new wrap-around) that carried Portis's name across the country and into Washington DC's corridors of power.

"The Altruist" - a war story set in Korea and improbably published in a science fiction fanzine in 1965, this Portis story -- while known and floating around online -- has never been reprinted until now.
