Aprašymas

More than 225 historical photographs—many never-before published—help shine new light on the life and times of Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa), the most well-known educated American Indian in the first half of the twentieth century.

Charles A. Eastman, Ohiyesa (1858-1939) was born in a tipi in the wilderness and lived in the traditional, nomadic way of his Sioux tribe until the age of 15. He went on to become a medical doctor, award-winning author, acclaimed lecturer, and noted reformer. His impressive looks, speaking skills, and stage presence captivated white audiences. His remarkable achievements earned him national and international recognition and numerous honors.

Ohiyesa was also known as a Native philosopher who stressed the importance of maintaining his ancestral cultural values. His insights are authoritative because he lived in two worlds: the traditional world of his Native ancestors, and the modern industrial world of the dominant white society. Throughout his life he helped to build bridges between those two often conflicting worldviews. The light Eastman shines on some of life’s most important questions becomes perhaps even more relevant in today’s world.
