Written during the Victorian era, the novel reflects contemporary anxieties around social change, including the rise of the middle class and the pressures of industrial and social reform. Carmilla was inspired in part by John Keats's poem "La Belle Dame sans Merci," which tells of a mysterious woman who seduces men into passion and despair. The novella is best known as a major influence on Bram Stoker's Dracula, establishing many of the tropes that would come to define vampire fiction.
