This book reviews empirical research on career development for workers of color and outlines strengths-based approaches to assessment and intervention to help them thrive.

Each chapter in the book's first half synthesizes the literature on a specific racial/ethnic group—Black Americans, Latine Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, and immigrants (including refugees and short-term residents)—with a corresponding chapter in the second half detailing best practices for helping members of these communities achieve their educational and career goals.

Foundational chapters identify the historical roots of discrimination and oppression that perpetuate in institutional barriers and biases today. They also explore vocational psychology literature—including key career theories like social cognitive career theory and the psychology of working theory—alongside multicultural psychology research and perspectives, such as critical race theory and intersectionality, to create an antiracist, decolonial, and liberatory framework for understanding the experiences and cultural values of workers of color.

Subsequent chapters highlight strategies and programs that are tailored to meet clients' individual and communal needs. They target multiple stages of career development, from education and career preparation for adolescents, to helping early career professionals build their skillsets, and to working with more experienced professionals seeking different career paths. Using these methods, practitioners can promote self-efficacy and culturally based healing to cope with racial trauma while also directly confronting systemic racism and colorism.
