At noon on August 9, 2014, Michael Brown and a friend were walking down Canfield Drive, a street in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. It was there that they encountered Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. The confrontation that ensued resulted in Wilson shooting Brown at least six times, leaving the teenager dead in the street.

Canfield Drive explains how its namesake street came into existence and developed over time as a place of racial violence. By examining the long urban history of St. Louis, Averett's work examines race as an element of urban development, explores the potential for violence in the built environment, and illuminates policies that created racial inequity in the United States. Though focused on St. Louis, Canfield Drive is a case-study for the history of the American city.
